19 Apr How the Leadership Program Helped a Mentee Thrive through the Pandemic
The pandemic, and everything else 2020 threw at us, wasn’t going to hold Katherine Robinson back from realizing her dreams. In a backyard ceremony with all her guests watching on Zoom, she got married.
Katherine is used to making things happen, even under less than stellar circumstances. And she’s able to do it, in part, because of the support she’s received from her mentor in the WLA’s Leadership Program. “I don’t think that I would have made it through 2020 the way I did,” says Katherine, “If it hadn’t been for the program.”
You see, getting married wasn’t the only major event for Katherine in 2020. In January, her father, who she had partnered with for eight years, retired. Katherine says, “My dad kind of dropped the bomb on me that he wanted to retire [even though] as long as we’d worked together, he’d always told me he was just going to work forever.”
Due to happenstance, as she calls it, or maybe fate, just after her dad dropped the ‘bomb’ Katherine was accepted into the WLA mentor program. “I knew I wanted to work on confidence, of being able to stand on my own two feet,” she says. “Building a brand that was separate from him and trying to kind of start that process of breaking my identity away from being a team and ramping up to being an individual.”
And that’s just what she did, due to the faith her WLA mentor Donna had in her. A the time Katherine thought, “I don’t know if I can do it, but if she thinks I can do it then, okay, I believe her. I felt like I had the confidence going into it when he retired. And now I know the proof is in the results… that I was able to get through that and feel good and nothing fell apart.”
So, while many of us just came out of 2020 with a few more pairs of yoga pants and a few extra pounds, Katherine is a newlywed with a thriving solo business just surpassed $100 Million in AUM. As she looks back, she says, “I got through it. My clients got through it. We didn’t have any disasters. Even though the world was collapsing around us.”
